Gongju City Council "Strongly Opposes Saemangeum-Sinseosan Transmission Line Construction Project"
Chairperson Lim Dalhee:
"Energy development without residents' consent cannot be justified"
The Gongju City Council in South Chungcheong Province officially expressed strong opposition to the Saemangeum-Sinseosan Transmission Line Construction Project on April 24, ahead of a residents' briefing session held at the Art Center Goma, the council announced on April 25.
The briefing session was organized as part of the "Shingyeryong-Bukcheonan and Saemangeum-Sinseosan Extra-High Voltage Transmission Line Construction Project," a national project being promoted by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This large-scale project involves the installation of 345kV extra-high voltage transmission lines, transmission towers, and substations to meet the electricity demand in the Seoul metropolitan area.
Prior to the briefing, Gongju City Council members, including Chairperson Lim Dalhee, and South Chungcheong Provincial Council member Park Miok, staged a banner protest at the site, calling for a complete reconsideration of the project and expressing strong opposition.
The council members pointed out, "The extra-high voltage transmission line is expected to pass extensively through the towns, townships, and neighborhoods of Gongju, raising concerns about various negative impacts such as environmental damage to the region, infringement on farmland, and exposure to electromagnetic waves." They also criticized Korea Electric Power Corporation for "forcing unilateral sacrifices on the region in the name of cost reduction and project efficiency."
Chairperson Lim Dalhee emphasized, "Energy development without the consent of local residents cannot be justified under any pretext. Gongju City Council firmly opposes the Saemangeum-Sinseosan Transmission Line Construction Project and strongly calls for a comprehensive reconsideration."
Meanwhile, at the 5th plenary session of the 257th extraordinary meeting held in March, the Gongju City Council adopted a resolution opposing the installation of the Shingyeryong-Bukcheonan and Saemangeum-Sinseosan transmission lines, officially expressing its opposition to the project.
