"Trump's Tariffs Cause Economic Turmoil"... Twelve States Including New York File Lawsuit
CNBC and other media outlets reported that twelve states, including New York, have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his administration, demanding an end to what they claim are unlawful tariff policies.
The plaintiffs argue that President Trump arbitrarily interpreted the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to implement tariff policies without congressional approval, and have filed their lawsuit with the U.S. Court of International Trade.
The plaintiffs in this case include New York, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont. Among these, Nevada and Vermont have Republican governors with moderate leanings, while the other ten states are led by Democratic governors.
They asserted, "No other president has ever imposed tariffs using the IEEPA," and argued, "By claiming the authority to declare a national emergency on any goods entering the United States and impose massive tariffs, President Trump has undermined constitutional order and caused chaos in the American economy."
Letitia James, New York Attorney General, stated in the lawsuit announcement, "The president does not have the authority to raise taxes at will, but President Trump has exercised such authority through tariffs."
