Haenam County's Safe Return Home Taxi for Youth Receives Positive Response
Safe Home for Just 1,000 Won
Up to 500,000 Won Support for Students in Rural Towns
Haenam County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Myung Hyun-kwan) announced on April 21 that its Safe Return Home Taxi Support Program for middle and high school students in the region is receiving a positive response.
The county introduced the Safe Return Home Taxi Support Program in 2019, becoming the first in Jeollanam-do to do so. The program, also known as the "1,000-won taxi," allows students returning home late at night from school or private academies to use a taxi by paying only 1,000 won for the fare.
In ten towns, including Haenam-eup, the program provides up to 300,000 won per month for taxi fares. In four towns?Songji, Bukpyeong, Munnae, and Hawon?where the distance from Haenam-eup to the town center exceeds 25 kilometers, up to 500,000 won is provided.
The program targets students from 15 middle and high schools in the county who return home after sunset due to night study sessions or private academy classes and have difficulty using public transportation. Starting with about 40 students in 2019, the number of participants has increased every year, reaching approximately 560 as of April this year, playing a significant role in ensuring students' safe return home at night.
Students wishing to use the service can submit an application form, a copy of their resident registration, and proof of study (such as a night study confirmation from the school or an academy enrollment certificate) to their school or apply by mail or fax to the Haenam County Safety and Transportation Division.
Additionally, students who wish to continue using the service after their initial application must submit supporting documents to their school or the county's Safety and Transportation Division by the 25th of each month. There are also important usage guidelines: the voucher card may only be used by the registered student, and users must comply with regulations such as using only registered departure and arrival locations and not using the service before sunset.
Governor Myung Hyun-kwan stated, "We are operating the 1,000-won taxi so that children in Haenam can focus on their studies with peace of mind and live in a safe commuting environment," adding, "We will continue to make multifaceted efforts to create an environment where students can safely return home after night study sessions."
