Government Task Force Activated to Prevent Landslide Risks in Wildfire-Affected Areas
The government has formed a dedicated task force (TF) to minimize slope disasters in wildfire-affected areas with a high risk of landslides.
On the 10th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it held the first meeting of the 'Slope Disaster Preparedness TF for Wildfire-Affected Areas,' chaired by Oh Byeong-gwon, Director of the Natural Disaster Division. Ministries such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Forest Service, local governments affected by wildfires, and specialized institutions attended the meeting.
Recently, large-scale wildfires have extensively destroyed forests, weakening the ground. Facilities such as retaining walls and rockfall prevention structures were also burned, raising concerns about damage from disasters like landslides or slope collapses if heavy rain falls.
At the meeting, the progress and cooperation status of each agency in preventing slope disasters in preparation for the summer heavy rains were discussed. Relevant ministries, local governments, and private experts participated to inspect wildfire-affected areas and plan to address slope disaster risk factors before the rainy season.
