Haenam-gun Launches Full-Scale 'Haenam-Style ESG Contest'
Four Organizations, Including Hwasan-myeon Residents' Autonomy Association, Selected
Haenam County, South Jeolla Province (Governor Myung Hyun-kwan) announced on the 10th that it has signed agreements with four organizations selected for the 2025 Haenam-style ESG Practice Contest Project and will officially begin implementing the projects.
Since 2022, the county has been promoting the Haenam-style ESG Practice Contest Project, which encourages resident participation to share its key ESG vision and spread its values. This year, through a screening process, four organizations were selected: Hwasan-myeon Residents’ Autonomy Association, Haenam Youth Association, Ttangkkeut Marine Natural History Museum, and Chohyo. Each organization will receive 10 million won in project funding.

The group plans to create a sustainable local economic model through intergenerational cooperation in environmental protection activities, practicing social agriculture, and producing recycled products.
The Haenam Youth Association will provide mentoring and career counseling for local youth, with young adults from various professions participating to offer practical support. In addition, it will host a youth regional development forum to encourage policy participation and raise awareness of local issues among young people.
The Ttangkkeut Marine Natural History Museum will operate an eco-friendly Green Workshop and run educational programs for elementary students to highlight the importance of marine environmental protection. Through hands-on activities, including easy recycling methods, students will be empowered to become active participants in environmental protection.
Chohyo will foster a sustainable consumption culture by producing healthy beverages and natural soaps using imperfect agricultural products. The group also plans to share and implement various ideas for resource utilization through regular activities, thereby promoting the value of resource circulation.
The selected organizations will carry out their projects from May to November and plan to publish a booklet of best practices to share experiences and know-how among the groups.
Meanwhile, Haenam County has proactively introduced ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, a core element of sustainable development, and incorporated it into county administration. As a result of these efforts, Haenam County was the only county-level local government to receive an Excellence Award at last year's National Sustainable Development Council conference, gaining external recognition for its sustainable policies and achievements.
A county official stated, "Through this contest project, we will actively support the establishment of resident-led Haenam-style ESG deeply within the local community," adding, "We will continue to promote policies for a sustainable future and expand ESG values throughout county administration."
