This campaign, organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Human Resource Development Institute for Health and Welfare, is being conducted to build social consensus and improve awareness regarding population issues.
Mayor Kang joined the campaign upon nomination by Gyeongnam Governor Park Wansu, and in turn, nominated Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Lee Jungseon and Chonnam National University President Lee Geunbae as the next participants.
Mayor Kang stated, "Creating a social environment where work and family can harmoniously coexist is the key to solving population issues," and added, "I will make Gwangju a 'Youth City' where young people can stay, work, and start families."
Meanwhile, last month, the city of Gwangju established the "2nd Gwangju City Five-Year Comprehensive Population Policy Plan" to address the population crisis, confirming four major policy directions and detailed action plans: ▲Creating a child-rearing safe society ▲Achieving an economy that attracts population inflow through sustainable jobs ▲Establishing vibrant spaces ▲Enhancing adaptability to future population structures.
This year, the city plans to create a "child-friendly city" through leading policies in childbirth, child-rearing, and care, such as the grandchild caregiver program, 10 a.m. start time for elementary school parents, public late-night children's hospitals, and Gwangju-daum integrated care.
