The Jeollanam-do Aging Tourist Site Regeneration Project is an initiative to improve tourist convenience facilities such as parking lots and restrooms that have been in use for over 20 years, and to discover unique content. The project is promoted through a public competition among cities and counties.
Three external tourism experts, including professors of tourism studies, were appointed as the evaluation panel. Focusing on the renovation of aging facilities, installation of facilities that harmonize with the surrounding natural environment, and enhancement of content, the panel conducted document reviews and on-site evaluations. As a result, the following sites were selected: Arirang Village Tourist Site in Jindo-gun, Mahan Culture Park Tourist Site in Yeongam-gun, Hong Gil-dong Theme Park Tourist Site in Jangseong-gun, and Usuyeong Tourist Site in Haenam-gun. Each site will receive a budget of 1.2 billion KRW, totaling 4.8 billion KRW.
The Arirang Village Tourist Site in Jindo-gun, which was selected for the project, plans to maximize its uniqueness by enhancing content that utilizes sound rather than traditional media, with Arirang Village as its theme.
For the Mahan Culture Park Tourist Site in Yeongam-gun, the focus will be on securing content that can fully introduce Mahan culture, while avoiding projects unrelated to Mahan culture, such as wetland maintenance and camping site construction.
The Hong Gil-dong Theme Park Tourist Site in Jangseong-gun plans to introduce exciting facilities such as a sky bicycle to maximize satisfaction among family tourists.
The Usuyeong Tourist Site in Haenam-gun, which is severely deteriorated, will revitalize its closed artifact exhibition hall by transforming it into a complex cultural space for the MZ generation and others, breathing new life into the aging tourist site.
Lee Sunho, Director of Tourism Development at Jeollanam-do, said, "We plan to avoid artificial facilities such as media art and nighttime landscape lighting as much as possible, and instead enhance facilities and content tailored to the characteristics of each tourist site so that visitors will want to come, see, and enjoy."
