Yangsan City Implements Special Measures for Wildfire Prevention Ahead of Cheongmyeong and Hansik
Yangsan City, Gyeongnam Province, is implementing special wildfire prevention measures in observance of Cheongmyeong and Hansik.
This action comes as the national wildfire disaster crisis alert has been raised to 'Severe' and wildfires are occurring nationwide, increasing the risk of forest fires.
After April, with the full onset of the spring farming season, there is an increase in the burning of rice paddies, fields, and agricultural waste, as well as a rise in the number of hikers and wild vegetable collectors, which heightens the risk of wildfires. Accordingly, Yangsan City has designated the entire city as a restricted entry zone for mountains and is urging the public to prevent wildfires.
In particular, with Cheongmyeong and Hansik (April 4-5) approaching, the city expects a surge in family visits to ancestral graves and a sharp increase in grave relocations and maintenance. Yangsan City plans to strengthen guidance and crackdowns on all types of burning activities near mountains, such as the burning of personal items.
To prevent wildfires, Yangsan City has deployed 23 unmanned surveillance cameras for round-the-clock monitoring, and 152 wildfire prevention personnel have been stationed in vulnerable areas such as cemeteries and major hiking trails to enhance monitoring and enforcement. In addition, a wildfire suppression helicopter is on standby, and the emergency contact system has been streamlined to ensure immediate response in the event of a wildfire.

Kim Cheolhwan, head of the city’s Forest Department, stated, “As temperatures rise and winds pick up in spring, the risk of wildfires increases. Even a small spark near the mountains can lead to a large-scale wildfire, so please refrain from any burning activities in areas adjacent to mountains.”
