"Pay Up or Be Deported"…Active Police Officer Threatening Undocumented Immigrants, Facing Trial in Custody
An active police officer who threatened illegal immigrants to extort money from them has been brought to trial while in custody.
According to the police and prosecution on the 2nd, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office recently indicted Sergeant Lee from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Mobile Patrol Unit and a man in his 60s named Jeong on charges of joint extortion under the Act on Punishment of Violent Crimes and dereliction of duty.
They are accused of visiting an illegal Chinese immigrant living in Dorim-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, last January and threatening him by saying, "If you don't want to be deported, pay us money." It is known that Jeong acted as an interpreter during this process.

During the police investigation, Sergeant Lee admitted to the charges, stating that he made a wrong judgment due to financial difficulties. He was suspended from his position immediately after the incident occurred.
