They discussed ways for citywide participation and specific plans to support the recovery from wildfire damage.
The city recalled that during difficult times caused by past earthquakes and Typhoon Hinnamnor, it received significant help from Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, Uiseong, Yeongyang, and Andong, which have now suffered major damage from the wildfires, in the form of donations, manpower, and equipment support.
At the meeting, Mayor Lee Kangduk emphasized to the attending heads of related institutions and organizations that Pohang City should take the lead in repaying the assistance it received by uniting efforts to help disaster victims restore their daily lives and support the affected areas.
As an immediate measure, the city will urgently provide relief supplies for residents of the affected areas. Essential daily necessities such as underwear, innerwear, socks, towels, and cosmetics will be provided first, and medical supplies and emergency relief kits will also be supplied.
In addition, the city will assess the needs for manpower and emergency recovery heavy equipment by city and county to assist in demolition and reconstruction work. Pohang Trauma Center will also provide psychological recovery support for affected residents.
Pohang City will receive requests from institutions, organizations, and individuals wishing to deliver relief goods and volunteer, coordinate support with the desired regions, and, after identifying the needs of the affected cities and counties in advance, will conduct effective matching in cooperation with the Pohang Volunteer Center.
A citywide voluntary fundraising campaign will also be promoted. A relief goods delivery window will be established for systematic support, and donations can be designated for specific affected areas through dedicated accounts.
Na Jooyoung, Chairman of the Pohang Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, "As the Gyeongbuk region has suffered significant damage from wildfires, we plan to jointly donate funds with other chambers of commerce in the region," and added, "We will actively encourage member companies and local businesses to participate in the citywide fundraising campaign to help affected residents quickly return to their daily lives."
Kim Ilman, Chairman of the Pohang City Council, said, "I propose establishing and operating a support situation room to ensure systematic and efficient support," and added, "The city council will also actively participate in supporting recovery efforts."
Mayor Lee Kangduk stated, "Pohang was able to overcome difficult times caused by natural disasters in the past thanks to the warm support of neighboring regions," and added, "Let us mobilize all our capabilities so that the affected areas can return to normal as soon as possible, with institutions, organizations, and all Pohang citizens working together."
At the meeting, Mayor Lee Kangduk also requested the heads of related institutions and organizations to cooperate in wildfire prevention, as the national disaster crisis alert for wildfires remains at the 'serious' level.
Pohang City is operating its Wildfire Prevention Countermeasures Headquarters on a 24-hour emergency system, and since the 27th, has issued administrative orders such as restricting mountain entry, banning outdoor burning, and prohibiting smoking in forests.
