Pukyong National University Selected as a Participating Institution in the UN Decade of Ocean Science Project
Seven Institutions Including Pukyong National University, Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, and Chonnam National University Participate
Pukyong National University (President Bae Sanghoon) has been selected as a participating institution in the international research project “UN Ocean Decade,” in which UN member states take part with the goal of protecting and sustainably using marine resources.
Pukyong National University, led by Professor Park Jaehyung (Department of Oceanography), was selected in the field of marine talent development for a project jointly proposed with Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, Chonnam National University, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, National Marine Science Museum, and the Korean Society of Oceanography.
These seven institutions were selected for their “KNOT (Korean Network of Oceanic Teams)” project, which was proposed based on the results of a joint project conducted over the past two years with support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Kang Dohyung), management by the Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion (President Jeon Jaewoo), and supervision by the Korean Academy of Marine Science and Technology (President Jung Haejin).
They were recognized for their potential to contribute to the cultivation of early-career ocean scientists for global development in the marine field as part of UNESCO’s efforts for a sustainable ocean.
Professor Park Jaehyung and the research team at Pukyong National University plan to carry out a sub-project of “ECOP (Early Career Ocean Professionals),” one of the core programs of the “UN Ocean Decade.” From this year until 2030, they will work to activate networks among early-career ocean scientists domestically and internationally, pioneer challenging and innovative fields in ocean science, enhance public ocean literacy, and engage in international joint research.
