This move aims to lead and cooperate in the global standardization of core digital technologies.
Through this agreement signed in Sophia Antipolis, France, both organizations have agreed to actively participate as partners in international joint research projects, including 'Horizon Europe.' Horizon Europe is a system for 'research and development selection, evaluation, project management, and settlement' established by the European Union (EU) to avoid redundant investments among member countries and to innovate the R&D environment. It provides a total of 95.5 billion euros (approximately 138 trillion KRW) in funding over seven years from 2021 to 2027. This year, South Korea joined as an associate member.
A TTA official stated, "Through this agreement, we plan to strengthen cooperation with Europe in standard research and international standardization more actively."
Additionally, both organizations agreed to enhance cooperation, including mutual standard referencing in the training of standard experts and in core digital technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, and open radio access networks (O-RAN).
Jan Elsberger, Secretary-General of ETSI, said, "TTA, Korea's representative ICT standardization organization, has been a key partner in the history of global standardization in core technology fields such as mobile communications and the Internet of Things. We look forward to jointly leading global standardization in the era of digital hegemony competition through strengthened partnerships via global joint research cooperation."
