Yangpyeong-gun, Two Villages Selected for 'Gyeonggi-do Resource Circulation Village Creation' Contest Project
Yongdam 1-ri Saemaeul Association and Daeya Elementary School Ecological Environment Committee
Chosen for the 2025 Gyeonggi-do Resource Circulation Village Project
Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province (Governor Jeon Jin-seon) announced on the 19th that two villages in the county were finally selected for the ‘2025 Gyeonggi-do Resource Circulation Village Creation Contest Project.’
This contest project is hosted by Gyeonggi Province and organized by the nonprofit organization The Better Community. It supports villages in the province to spread a culture of resource circulation practice and enables residents to proactively lead resource circulation activities.
This year, a total of 45 villages in the province applied, and after screening, 18 villages (8 for hub creation, 10 for village revitalization) were finally selected. In Yangpyeong-gun, the Saemaeul Association of Yongdam 1-ri, Yangseo-myeon (hub creation) and the Ecological Environment Committee of Daeya Elementary School (village revitalization) were selected, receiving 30 million KRW and 20 million KRW respectively.
The Saemaeul Association of Yongdam 1-ri plans to promote proper waste separation education for residents centered around the village hall, operate sharing markets, and install disposal boxes for certain household waste items. In addition, various activities will be linked to raise awareness of the importance of resource circulation among tourists. Last year, Yongdam 1-ri village was selected as a specialized district free of disposable products, and it has continuously provided reusable cups and aprons to 24 cafes, restaurants, and public institutions along the Yangsu Station to Semiwon section, while conducting awareness improvement education.
The Ecological Environment Committee of Daeya Elementary School has been steadily carrying out resource circulation practice activities for over 10 years. In particular, the ‘Jaljaljal Playground Project (Sunlight Place & Starlight Place),’ which involves students, parents, and residents together, has been certified as an official UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development project. Through this contest project, they plan to take the lead in reusing resources and revitalizing the circular economy by addressing local waste issues and conducting related campaigns.
Song Hye-sook, head of the Cleaning Department, said, “This selection is the result of the residents’ voluntary participation and strong will for resource circulation,” adding, “We will actively support the two selected villages so that they can become models for spreading the culture of resource circulation in the region.”
