In their declaration, they said, "Village communities are not just gatherings but the foundation of democracy," and criticized, "The policies of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, which have reduced state support and shaken the village movement at its roots, are attempts to destroy the community." They continued, "Just as Gwangju did, we will fight to the end," and declared, "We will protect democracy with the power of the community."
On the same day, six anti-Japanese independence movement organizations in Gwangju also held a press conference, stating, "For the past three years, the Yoon Suk-yeol administration has insulted the spirit of the anti-Japanese independence movement and continued anti-historical actions that grant Japan a free pass through a pro-Japanese historical coup," and insisted, "Democracy and historical justice must be swiftly restored through an impeachment ruling against the Yoon Suk-yeol administration."
On this day, the Gwangju Emergency Action for Immediate Resignation of Yoon Suk-yeol and Social Reform is also marching from the May 18 Democracy Square to the Gwangju District Court. They have been holding nightly rallies and relay press conferences, condemning the judiciary and prosecution for directing the release of President Yoon. Gwangju Emergency Action is a regional emergency organization with participation from over 180 civic and social groups.
