Roads Turn Icy Amid Cold Wave and Strong Winds
In the Honam region, the cold snap of March brought heavy snow and a cold wave.
According to the Gwangju and Jeonju Meteorological Offices on the 18th, as of the morning, most areas in Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk saw accumulated snow, with strong wind and heavy snow advisories in effect.
As of 5 a.m. that day, Gwangju and Jeonnam recorded snow accumulation of 3.4 cm in Boknae-myeon, Boseong-gun, 2.3 cm in Yuchi-myeon, Jangheung-gun, 2 cm in Suncheon, 1.7 cm in Gwangju, and 1.6 cm in Iyang-myeon, Hwasun-gun. In Jeonbuk, 6.6 cm was recorded at Deogyusan, Muju, 4.7 cm in Jinan, 4.3 cm in Imsil, 3.8 cm in Jangsu, and 0.4 cm in Jeonju.
It is expected that 3 to 8 cm of additional snow will fall mainly in the eastern inland areas of Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk, and about 1 to 5 cm in the western and plain areas. Heavy snow advisories are in effect for Gurye and Gokseong in Jeonnam and most areas in Jeonbuk. Some regions are experiencing rain instead of snow, with precipitation forecasted at around 5 to 10 mm.
In Gwangju and Jeonnam, where a strong wind advisory has been issued, morning lows ranged from -6 to 6 degrees Celsius, while in Jeonbuk, temperatures dropped to -5.5 degrees (Jinan) and 0.8 degrees (Jeonju). Daytime highs are expected to be 4 to 8 degrees in Gwangju and Jeonnam, and 2 to 6 degrees in Jeonbuk, about 2 to 3 degrees lower than the previous day.
A Gwangju Meteorological Office official said, "Depending on the altitude, snow and rain may fall together, and there is a possibility of heavy, wet snow accumulating, so caution is needed."
