Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is recruiting participants for the ‘2025 Urban Beekeeping School’.
The Urban Beekeeping School is a project designed to raise awareness of the economic and ecological value and importance of honeybees, which are environmental indicators, and to provide opportunities to experience urban agriculture. It was first established in 2016 and has been operated annually, gaining popularity as participants can directly try beekeeping in the city.
Any Seoul citizen can apply. The education period starts with the first lecture on April 9 and continues until September, totaling 20 sessions. Every Wednesday, from 10 a.m. for two hours, theoretical education and practical training on seasonal bee management methods are conducted together.
The training takes place at the beekeeping education center located in Gwangjang-dong Jatuli Garden. The tuition fee is 50,000 KRW, and an urban beekeeping expert instructor systematically and easily teaches everything from the basics to advanced topics, including ▲basic principles of beekeeping ▲bee ecology and management ▲honey harvesting know-how ▲queen bee management. Twenty participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and if applications exceed 20, selection will be made by public lottery.
A honeybee experience classroom will also be operated. Ten daycare centers and kindergartens in the area will be selected, and from April 18, the program will be held twice a week on Mondays and Fridays for a total of 10 sessions. It consists of programs suitable for children’s level, such as beekeeping farm tours and honeycomb making experiences, and is free of charge.
The application period is from the 17th to 5 p.m. on the 21st. Applications can be made by visiting the district office in person or through the Gwangjin-gu Office website. For more details, contact the Parks and Greenery Division of Gwangjin-gu Office.
