In particular, 66 out of 73 elementary schools in Seongnam applied for population education, showing that over 90% of elementary schools expressed their intention to participate. Among middle schools, 16 out of 46 schools applied for the education.
The city has been operating population education to improve awareness of low birth rates for elementary, middle, and high school students for two years now. In 2024, in collaboration with current elementary, middle, and high school teachers, the Seongnam Office of Education, and the Seongnam Youth and Young Adult Foundation, the city developed customized population education programs by grade level and conducted an instructor training course, producing 67 instructors who directly provide education, thereby completing the population education system. Additionally, education was conducted for 35 elementary, middle, and high schools in the city, covering 201 classes (10,050 students).
Mayor Shin Sang-jin of Seongnam said, “Education that enhances students’ understanding of the importance of family and fosters a positive perception of marriage, as the future generation, is one of the most important policies to solve the low birth rate problem,” adding, “We will expand education so that all schools that applied can benefit.”
