Gwangju Office of Education Completes School Space Preparation for High School Credit System
The Gwangju Office of Education has completed the renovation of learning spaces in general high schools in line with the implementation of the high school credit system. The focus was on expanding students' course selection options and creating an environment that can be flexibly utilized according to various teaching methods.
According to the Gwangju Office of Education on the 12th, the project began in 2019 at four schools including Bitgoeul High School and Cheomdan High School, and was expanded to a total of 51 schools this February, including Goryeo High School and Jangdeok High School. Each school has established flexible classrooms, individual study spaces, and multipurpose lecture rooms so that students can use the spaces according to different teaching methods. Rest areas were also created so that students can study even during free periods.
Teachers, parents, and students directly participated in the design of the school spaces. With consulting from educational facility experts and space planners (facilitators), key areas such as classrooms, hallways, and libraries were reorganized.
One student said, "The teaching methods have become more flexible, and it's great to be able to use the space for group discussions or project-based classes." A teacher commented, "With the introduction of the high school credit system approaching, changes to the learning environment were desperately needed. Thanks to the flexible learning spaces, class management has become much more efficient."
Superintendent Lee Jeongseon stated, "Changing the learning environment is essential to reflect students' diverse career paths and aptitudes," and added, "We will support customized curricula by utilizing the newly created spaces."
