Gwangyang Free Economic Zone Authority Inspects Facilities Emitting Environmental Pollutants
Year-Round Guidance and Inspections for 88 Businesses
The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Koo Chungon, hereinafter referred to as Gwangyang FEZ Authority) announced on the 27th that it has established an integrated guidance and inspection plan for facilities emitting environmental pollutants in 2025 and will conduct inspections throughout the year on 88 businesses in relevant industries within its jurisdiction.
To enhance the effectiveness of the inspections, Gwangyang FEZ Authority plans to classify businesses into three grades?excellent, general, and key?based on criteria such as business size and past legal violations, and to differentiate the number of inspections accordingly.
Additionally, the authority will implement more systematic management of emission facilities by conducting environmental patrols in parallel, focusing on vulnerable periods such as holiday seasons and the rainy season, vulnerable areas such as regions with frequent complaints and high pollution risk, and vulnerable businesses such as those with aging facilities. In particular, this year, the authority will strengthen advance notifications to reduce the burden on companies while increasing the effectiveness of guidance and inspections.
By providing advance information on the inspection plan and compliance requirements for operating emission facilities, the authority aims to encourage voluntary inspections by businesses and relieve burdens caused by repeated enforcement by integrating inspections of various emission facilities, such as air and wastewater.
Koo Chungon, Commissioner of Gwangyang FEZ Authority, stated, "This year's guidance and inspections will be conducted in an open manner that supports voluntary improvement by companies, rather than unilateral enforcement," adding, "We will continue to strengthen preventive environmental monitoring to create a clean environment."
Meanwhile, to enhance expertise in environmental management, Gwangyang FEZ Authority plans to reorganize the members of the Environmental Technology Advisory Group whose terms have expired and provide free technical support to businesses experiencing difficulties in environmental management starting in March.
