On the 25th, over 180 historical and civic groups from Gwangju and Jeonnam held a press conference at the May 18 Democracy Square in Dong-gu, stating, "The Yoon Suk-yeol administration ignored the Supreme Court's ruling on compensation for forced labor and gave Japanese war criminal companies a free pass by introducing the bizarre 'third-party repayment' scheme," and "They insulted independence activists who sacrificed their lives fighting against Japanese imperialism by sparking controversy over the removal of the Hong Beomdo bust."
They continued, "President Yoon has undermined and mocked historical justice by appointing New Right figures, who can be considered pro-Japanese, such as Kim Hyung-seok as Director of the Independence Hall, Heo Dong-hyun as Director of the National Institute of Korean History, and Park Ji-hyang as Chairperson of the Northeast Asian History Foundation, to key historical institutions," and "He tried to shift blame to North Korea for the drone infiltration of Pyongyang and the fabricated terror incident involving Korean special forces, attempting to use it as a pretext for martial law."
They added, "Our security must be protected by ourselves, not by foreign powers or superpowers. The impeachment of President Yoon is for the peace of the Korean Peninsula," emphasizing, "We must stop the war immediately and bring about a wind of peace. All war exercises taking place on the Korean Peninsula in cooperation with foreign powers must be halted."
