Development of Large Displays for SDVs
A Massive Screen Spanning from Driver to Passenger Seat
From Navigation to Movie Viewing, All on One Screen
LG Display is commercializing the industry's first ultra-large vehicle display, the '40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar (P2P).' It is scheduled to be installed in 'Apilla,' the first electric vehicle from Sony Honda Mobility, launching next year.
According to LG Display on the 24th, the 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar from LG Display will be installed in 'Apilla,' the first electric vehicle from Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Japan's Sony and automobile company Honda. Apilla is a next-generation electric vehicle that combines Sony's advanced IT and entertainment technology with Honda's unique vehicle body manufacturing capabilities. Apilla1 is currently accepting pre-orders and is planned to be delivered from mid-next year.
Pillar-to-Pillar is an ultra-large vehicle display that spans horizontally from the left end of the driver's side windshield pillar (pillar) to the right end of the passenger side. Software-defined vehicles (SDVs), which control vehicle performance through software and enhance driving convenience, require the installation of large displays that facilitate various information visualization and function operation.
LG Display has been leading the vehicle display sector by mass-producing vehicle P-OLEDs for the first time in the industry in 2019. At CES 2024, the information technology and consumer electronics exhibition held last year, LG Display also showcased the world's largest vehicle display, the 57-inch Pillar-to-Pillar. According to market research firm Omdia, as of 2023, LG Display and Samsung Display share about 90% of the global vehicle display market. LG Display recorded the highest industry share at 51.7%.
LG Display plans to provide personalized infotainment experiences for both drivers and passengers, maximizing the usability of advanced SDV functions and delivering differentiated customer value. Infotainment refers to software that adds entertainment to information delivery.

The 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar allows users to instantly grasp various information through its ultra-large screen while easily operating vehicle functions.
To help drivers focus on safe driving, the 'SPM (Viewing Angle Control Technology) mode' has also been applied. This technology, commercialized for the first time in the industry by LG Display, ensures that even if passengers watch movies or play games on the front passenger display, the driver’s seat does not see it, preventing distraction from forward attention. The 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar features ultra-high definition while controlling the viewing angle toward the driver’s seat without degrading image quality.
The 'local dimming (screen partition driving)' technology, which reduces heat generation and power consumption, has also been applied for the first time. Local dimming divides the backlight into multiple zones to drive the screen in segments, thereby reducing battery consumption and significantly improving driving efficiency.
