Another Job Scam Uncovered... Former Kia Motors Union Official in Gwangju Under Police Investigation
Police Receive Complaint Against Former Union Executive
Investigating Allegations of Employment Solicitation and Bribery
The police have launched an investigation after receiving a complaint alleging that a former labor union executive at the Kia Gwangju Plant pocketed 80 million won by promising employment. The victim claimed to have been guaranteed a job within a year, but filed a complaint with the police after the promise was not kept.
The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 21st that they had received a complaint from a citizen (identified as A) against former Kia Gwangju Plant union executive (identified as B), and are currently verifying the facts.
According to the complaint, B, while serving as a union executive at the Kia Gwangju Plant in 2023, demanded money from A, promising, "I will guarantee you a job within a year." A claims to have handed over 50 million won, and then, upon B's additional request, another 30 million won, totaling 80 million won.
However, as A was not employed even after a year and did not receive the promised refund, A filed a complaint against B with the police.
The police plan to summon B soon to investigate whether B received money in exchange for employment and whether B was in a position to actually influence employment at the Kia Gwangju Plant at that time.
Meanwhile, in 2020, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency also arrested a group that swindled 13 billion won from more than 630 people by promising jobs at the Kia Gwangju Plant. The main perpetrator, a man in his 30s, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on appeal.
