He continued, "I plan to do my utmost to develop Mokpo University into a prestigious global green marine energy university so that young people in the region can achieve their dreams and lead happy lives."
The Mokpo University Glocal University project aims, first, to support the future industrialization of Jeonnam's key industries in response to rapid global environmental changes, with the goal of becoming a prestigious university for eco-friendly carbon-free ships and global green marine energy. Second, through integration with Jeonnam Provincial College, it plans to be the first national university to operate both 2-year and 4-year educational programs, providing skilled workers and technical personnel needed by the local community. Third, to overcome the crisis of regional extinction, it plans to foster seven campuses in five cities and counties as centers for youth culture, arts, and entrepreneurship.
Through the Glocal University project, Mokpo University will contribute to revitalizing the local economy by providing 8 billion KRW in annual scholarships via local cards, and plans to invest in the industries and commercial districts of the relevant municipalities by combining national and provincial funds with the local government budgets pledged by five basic local governments in support of the project. With a large-scale investment in the Glocal University project, the regional economic impact of Mokpo University is expected to expand to approximately 1.2 trillion KRW by 2028.
Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Global Innovation Forum is co-chaired by Song Hacheol, President of Mokpo University, and Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do. The forum was launched on July 2 last year to identify regional cooperation project needs, suggest policy directions, and share and spread innovation achievements for the promotion of the Glocal University initiative. It involves participation from local governments, regional universities, public institutions, and the industrial sector.
