Jeonnam Province Expands Low-Carbon Agricultural Product Certification... Aiming for No.1 Nationwide
To be expanded to 6,160 hectares this year
Applications accepted by the Korea Institute of Agricultural Technology Promotion until the 21st
Jeollanam-do will launch a large-scale expansion of 'low-carbon agricultural product certification' based on its eco-friendly agriculture certification foundation, which accounts for 50% of the national total.
According to Jeollanam-do on the 11th, the low-carbon agricultural product certification system aims to promote the consumption of low-carbon agricultural products and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector.
The certification is granted to 65 types of agricultural products if they emit less greenhouse gas than the average for each item by utilizing low-carbon agricultural technologies such as reducing the use of pesticides, fertilizers, and other agricultural materials and energy. As of December last year, the certified area for low-carbon agricultural products in Jeollanam-do was 1,660 hectares, ranking 4th nationwide (11.7%). The province plans to newly expand and support agricultural product certification to achieve the top spot nationwide.
Farmers practicing eco-friendly agriculture can obtain certification simply by farming in their usual way, as they do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides and utilize green manure crops and biological resources for weeding. Eligibility to apply for low-carbon agricultural product certification is limited to farmers (or agricultural products) who have received eco-friendly agricultural product or Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification.
Farmers wishing to apply in the first half of this year must submit their applications to the Climate Change Response Team of the Korea Institute of Agricultural Technology Promotion by email, mail, or fax by the 21st. Required documents include: ▲application form for support project ▲production status report ▲national certificate for eco-friendly or GAP agricultural products ▲evidence of low-carbon agricultural technology, etc.
The certification fee is fully supported (up to 1 million won per case). Further details can be found on the websites of the Korea Institute of Agricultural Technology Promotion and Smart Green Food.
Kim Youngseok, Director of Eco-friendly Agriculture at Jeollanam-do, stated, "Agriculture cannot be an exception in overcoming global warming, and low-carbon agriculture is now a necessity, not a choice."
Meanwhile, the government introduced the low-carbon livestock and agricultural product certification system in 2012, and in October 2020 announced the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Strategy Implementation Plan to proactively respond to climate change and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 in line with the international community. The sales of low-carbon certified agricultural products have continued to increase, from 55.3 billion won in 2020 to 82.8 billion won in 2023.
