Strong Coupling with President Yoon Harms Party's Outreach
"Early Presidential Election Should Be Considered for Conservatives"
Kim Jae-seop, a member of the People Power Party, expressed on the 5th that the party leadership should put an end to the spreading 'fraudulent election theory' mainly within the conservative camp. He also emphasized the need to prepare for an early presidential election, saying it is better than being unprepared.
In an interview with SBS Radio on the same day, Kim said, "The People Power Party must officially state that there was no fraudulent election." Unlike President Yoon, who is undergoing impeachment proceedings and raising issues such as fraudulent elections based on the legitimacy of martial law, Kim argued that the party leadership should cut off such claims.
Kim said, "President Yoon conducted early voting in the 2022 presidential election, and the party repeatedly encouraged early voting campaigns," adding, "The party line frequently stated by the People Power Party is that there was no fraudulent election." He continued, "It is strange to repeatedly say there was no fraudulent election and then suggest investigating the suspicions again. It means breaking the party line and then questioning it again."
He stated, "The discourse on fraudulent elections undermines trust in the election system itself, collapses the foundation of democracy, and causes excessive distrust in politics," and added, "The party leadership must stop it."
Regarding the fact that the two main pillars of the People Power Party leadership, Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kwon Young-se and Floor Leader Kwon Seong-dong, visited President Yoon in detention, Kim expressed that he still thinks it is 'cowardly' and not a good idea. In response to criticism for criticizing the leadership while holding the position of Deputy Head of Organization within the party, he said, "If the criticism is unreasonable or causes trouble, the party leader will dismiss me," and added, "Holding a party position cannot block freedom of speech." He also countered the criticism that key party officials like Chairman Kwon personally visited, saying, "People might criticize why they go personally while holding party positions."
He also expressed concern about the party being too closely aligned with President Yoon. He said, "If the party is too strongly coupled with the president, it will be impossible to follow the messages of pro-impeachment factions like Lee Jun-seok, a reformist party member, or Han Dong-hoon, former People Power Party leader, and the conservative space will shrink." Kim added, "There are even talks that Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, is shifting to the right," and said, "Our emergency committee should compete in innovation rather than being stuck in the past."

Regarding the early presidential election, he also expressed the opinion that it is better to prepare than to be 'unarmed.' He said, "Within the party, the term 'early presidential election' is almost taboo," but added, "Impeachment can be either dismissed or accepted, so we must keep the possibility of acceptance in mind." He said, "Rather than holding the election in an unprepared state, the conservative camp must secure that space to accommodate voters who sympathize with conservative values rather than the president himself."
