[New Release] Complete Translation of 'Chunchu Jwaseojeon Gyujanggak Edition'... Published After 23 Years
Complete Translation of "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Gyujanggakbon,"
a Reconstruction of Confucius's "Chunqiu"
23 Years of Work by Three Yudohoe Scholars
This is the complete translation of the "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Gyujanggakbon," a reconstruction of Confucius's historical text "Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals)" by scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. It consists of three volumes and was completed over 23 years by three scholars affiliated with the Yudohoe (儒道會), a domestic institution for nurturing talent in Oriental and Korean studies. The translation fully preserves the original content of the "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Gyujanggakbon."
The Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals) is a historical record compiled by Confucius, documenting events over 242 years from 722 to 481 B.C. centered on the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period, arranged in a chronological format. Due to its highly condensed meaning, it is difficult to interpret, and various commentaries exist, including versions by Confucius’s disciple Zuo Qiuming (Zuo Qiuming), Du Yu (Du Ye), Lu Deming (Yuk Deokmyeong), and Lin Yaoshu (Im Yosu). The "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Gyujanggakbon" primarily references Du Yu’s commentary "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Jingzhuan Ji Jie (春秋左氏經傳集解)."
The source text for this translation, the "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Gyujanggakbon," was compiled at the Gyujanggak in the 21st year of King Jeongjo’s reign (1797). It is highly valued historically and academically as a commentary reorganized from the perspective of Joseon Dynasty scholars. It features the addition and subtraction of Du Yu’s "Chunqiu Zuozhuan Jingzhuan Ji Jie" according to the views of Gyujanggak scholars of the time, and a novel method of reconstruction.
Given the longstanding demand in academia for a translation that minimizes distortion and aids understanding, this work is considered academically significant in the fields of Oriental classics, history, and classical Chinese literature.
The translation began in 2002, with a first draft completed in 2014, followed by proofreading, and was finalized earlier this year.
