20,000 Newborns in November Last Year... Largest Increase in 14 Years
Increase in Births Since July Last Year
The number of births exceeded 20,000 last November. It increased by more than 2,500 compared to the same month the previous year, marking the largest increase in November in 14 years.
According to the 'November 2024 Population Trends' released by Statistics Korea on the 22nd, the number of births last November was 20,095, an increase of 2,565 (14.6%) compared to the same month the previous year. This is the largest increase for November since 2010 (6,146).
The number of births showed an increasing trend for five consecutive months since July last year. If the number of births continues to rise next month, the annual number of births last year will rebound for the first time in nine years. Statistics Korea explained that the previous decline in births acted as a base effect, and that the increase in marriages since August 2022 led to a simultaneous rise in births.
The number of deaths last November was 29,219, a decrease of 1,145 (3.8%) compared to the same month the previous year. As a result, the population for that month, calculated by subtracting deaths from births, naturally decreased by 9,124 (-2.2%).
