In particular, the Mokpo Seafood Food Support Center (Chairman Park Hongryul) was designated in 2022 as the nation's first Gim industry specialized institution by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, opening the path for the specialization of the Gim industry. The city has also stood out in research and development, being selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT's project to develop and demonstrate an "AI-based dried Gim quality grade determination solution."
Furthermore, by 2026, the city plans to invest KRW 113.7 billion to establish a seafood export complex with a total floor area of 46,612 square meters, supporting research, development, and exports by attracting Gim processing and export companies. Once the seafood export complex is completed, Mokpo City's efforts to pioneer the global dried Gim market are expected to gain further momentum, including securing transparency in Gim transactions through the International Dried Gim Exchange.
A city official stated, "Achieving the top spot in Gim exports nationwide in 2024 is the result of early recognition and focus on the high value-added Gim industry," adding, "Above all, being recognized in the global market played a significant role."
Mayor Park Hongryul said, "Being number one in Gim exports nationwide is not the end result, but rather part of the process toward becoming the leading city in the seafood food industry, and we will continue efforts to add high value to seafood products."
