Simunamu Grove in Dangjin Designated as National Forest Cultural Asset
On the 20th, Dangjin City in South Chungcheong Province announced that the ‘Simunamu Community’ located at Mongsanseong Fortress has been designated as a National Forest Cultural Asset.
The National Forest Cultural Asset is a system established and operated by the Korea Forest Service since 2014 to protect and manage tangible and intangible assets of high ecological, scenic, and emotional value that have been formed in forests or are related to forests.
Mongsanseong Fortress was built during the Baekje period and served as the command post of Hye Gun during the Baekje Restoration War. It also played an important military role during the Goryeo period.
The Simunamu at Mongsanseong Fortress is a double-layered defensive wall community, artificially created during the Baekje period as a means of defense against enemy invasions. As the only such example in the country, its significance and uniqueness have been recognized with its designation as a National Forest Cultural Asset.
Gong Youngsik, Head of the Culture and Sports Division, stated, “The designation of the Simunamu at Mongsanseong Fortress as a National Forest Cultural Asset marks the beginning of a new chapter for Dangjin City’s cultural heritage,” adding, “We will also strive for systematic preservation of the Simunamu and its connection with Myeoncheon Eupseong Fortress.”
