Switzerland and Serbia Hope to Host Meeting
On the 20th (local time), President-elect Donald Trump, who is officially inaugurated, has instructed his aides to schedule a phone call with President Vladimir Putin within days after the inauguration, CNN reported on the 19th (local time).
According to CNN, Trump's national security team reportedly began preparations for a call between President Putin and President-elect Trump several weeks ago. It is unclear whether a specific date for the call has been set. However, CNN reported that the two leaders are expected to speak soon after the presidential inauguration.
Earlier, Mike Waltz, the next White House National Security Advisor nominee, said on ABC on the 12th that preparations are underway for a meeting between President-elect Trump and President Putin, adding, "I expect a phone call between the two within days or weeks at the latest."
Trump's team stated that coordination for a summit with Russia has already begun, but the Russian side has shown caution, saying that preparations will intensify after the launch of the second Trump administration.
The two leaders are expected to coordinate a summit schedule during the phone call to discuss an exit strategy for the Ukraine war. During the election process, President-elect Trump pledged that "once inaugurated, I can end the Ukraine war within 24 hours," advocating for an early end to the conflict.
