Posted a Message Requesting Help from Multiple Lawyers
Former Prime Minister Hwang Kyoan has announced that he will provide pro bono legal defense in connection with the "Western District Court violence incident" carried out by fervent supporters of President Yoon Sukyeol.
On January 19, Hwang posted on social media, "I am currently visiting various police stations to meet with those who were arrested yesterday and today while trying to protect the President."
He continued, "I am deeply saddened that 86 people have been arrested," emphasizing, "I will offer free legal representation. I must help in any way I can."
In another related post, Hwang stated that the assistance of many lawyers would be needed. He said, "I believe lawyers should at least be reimbursed for their expenses, so I would appreciate any support. When sending membership fees, please write (lawyer) before your name, and I will use it for that purpose."
Hwang has continuously raised allegations of election fraud. Recently, he participated in rallies opposing the impeachment of President Yoon and has also expressed his stance on social media.
According to the police, around 3 p.m. when news broke that an arrest warrant had been issued for President Yoon, approximately 1,300 people had gathered around the court-900 in front of the court and 400 at the rear gate. Of these, about 300 people near the rear gate broke down the court entrance and entered the premises. It was reported that some attempted to climb over the wall, throwing glass bottles, stones, and chairs in alleys behind the court. At around 5:30 p.m., the police moved approximately 40 people who were inside the court premises out through the rear gate and secured the area around the rear gate and the back alleys. The police operation concluded at around 6:30 p.m. The number of injured police officers increased from the previously reported 42 to 51 (including 7 with serious injuries).
