This unloading operation was carried out to ensure the smooth supply of emergency equipment needed in case of urgent situations during drilling, following Yeongilman Port’s designation as the primary auxiliary port for drilling in November last year.
The city has been closely monitoring any emergencies arising during the drilling process and has cooperated closely with the Korea National Oil Corporation to enable drilling-related operations at Yeongilman Port.
The auxiliary port unloading operation at Yeongilman Port, attempted for the first time, holds great significance in accumulating essential port experience not only for additional drilling operations in the future but also to prepare Yeongilman Port to advance as a hinterland port in anticipation of visible oil field development.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang personally visited the first drilling-related operation site, which was achieved through close consultations to accumulate experience as an auxiliary port, inspected the supply vessel, and encouraged the Korea National Oil Corporation and port officials.
After Pohang City and Gyeongbuk Province signed a regional win-win development MOU with the Korea National Oil Corporation in July last year, the first step toward concretizing the agreement was taken in September by establishing the ‘Korea National Oil Corporation-Pohang Mutual Development Cooperation Center’ within the Pohang City Hall.
Since then, efforts to continuously discover win-win projects, including measures to revitalize Yeongilman Port, have led to the auxiliary port contract and the unloading operation of the supply vessel.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “The fact that drilling-related operations were carried out at Yeongilman Port is truly a great achievement,” adding, “We will do our utmost to participate in the historic transformation of the national energy industry by solidly preparing through infrastructure expansion at Yeongilman Port and accumulating sufficient experience.”

Pohang City, in close cooperation with Gyeongbuk Province, plans to focus on expanding Yeongilman Port infrastructure in preparation for the development of the East Sea deep-sea gas field, and will make thorough efforts to establish Yeongilman Port as an energy port hub by promoting projects such as the ‘Yeongilman Port Expansion and Development Basic Plan Service’ and the ‘Yeongilman Port Swell (wave surge) Improvement Measures Service.’
