Director of the Cultural Heritage Administration Visits Goryeong-gun to Discuss the Vision for Daegaya Historical and Cultural City
On the 16th, Choi Eung-cheon, Commissioner of the Cultural Heritage Administration, visited Goryeong-gun to discuss the development direction of Goryeong-gun, which is being reborn as a historical and cultural city through the inscription of the Gaya Tumuli on the World Heritage List and the designation of Daegaya as an ancient capital, and conducted an on-site inspection.
During the visit, Lee Nam-cheol, the mayor of Goryeong-gun, along with Lee Cheol-ho, chairman of the county council, Noh Seong-hwan, provincial council member, and Kim Byeong-gon, director of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau, gathered to have an in-depth discussion on ways to revitalize the cultural heritage sector of Goryeong-gun and the creation of a historical and cultural city.
Goryeong-gun first pursued the inscription of the Daegaya Historic Sites District on the World Heritage List in 2011, and after more than 10 years of preparation, seven Gaya tumulus groups, including the Jisan-dong Tumuli in Goryeong, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. Following the inscription, Goryeong-gun identified 70 projects as part of a post-inscription promotion strategy and actively responded, achieving a result of more than a 40% increase in visitors to the Jisan-dong Tumuli.
In 2024, it was designated as the fifth ancient capital in Korea, marking a new turning point. The long history and cultural elements of Daegaya were reflected throughout the region to restore the historical landscape and lay the foundation for a representative historical and cultural city.
In this way, Goryeong-gun is conducting city branding centered on the Daegaya historical and cultural heritage and has proposed related cultural heritage sector pending projects to the Cultural Heritage Administration. The Cultural Heritage Administration expressed its intention to actively support these efforts.
