Joint Memorial Service for Jeju Air Crash Victims to Be Held at Muan Airport on the 18th
Government-Led Ceremony
Honoring the Souls of the Victims
The joint memorial ceremony for the victims of the December 29 Jeju Air passenger plane disaster will be solemnly held as an official government event at 11 a.m. on the 2nd floor of Muan International Airport on the 18th.
The ceremony, hosted by the bereaved families of the December 29 Jeju Air disaster and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and organized by Jeollanam-do, Gwangju City, and Muan County, will be attended by around 1,200 people, including approximately 700 bereaved family members, government officials, members of the National Assembly, and local government representatives.
The memorial service will begin with a commemorative performance. About 20 members of the National Intangible Heritage Jindo Ssitgimgut Preservation Association will perform a ritual of dance and song to release the souls of the deceased and pray for their peaceful rest, accompanied by traditional music.
Following a moment of silence, the flower-laying ceremony will feature the names of the 179 victims and condolence messages left by visitors and family members on Post-it notes on the airport's second-floor stairs, all displayed on LED screens to honor the spirits of the victims.
After memorial speeches by representatives of the victims' families and distinguished guests, a tribute video titled "Time of Remembrance" will be shown, depicting scenes of national support, condolence processions, on-site recovery efforts, and prayers for the deceased since the accident. A letter written by a representative of the bereaved families, sharing stories of the victims, will also be read aloud.
The memorial event will conclude with a performance of the tribute song "My Soul Becomes the Wind," after which the bereaved families will visit the accident site to pay their respects to the victims.
Jeollanam-do will deploy rescue and emergency fire services at the venue to prepare for any emergencies, such as fainting among the bereaved families, and will operate an on-site medical support team.
