Yangsan Baeksehakdang, Recruiting Adult Learners for Elementary and Middle School Academic Programs
Free Elementary and Middle School Equivalency Program
for Adults Who Missed School-Age Education
Yangsan City in Gyeongnam is recruiting learners for a free elementary and middle school equivalency program for adults who missed the opportunity to receive basic education due to social and economic difficulties during their school-age years. Recruitment will be on a first-come, first-served basis from January 20 to June 5 at the Eup/Myeon/Dong administrative welfare centers, local welfare centers, and the Yangsan Lifelong Learning Center.
The free elementary and middle school equivalency program for adults provides basic life education such as Hangul, everyday numbers, basic English, and how to use mobile phones to adults who have not received basic education. It offers various subjects similar to school, and those who attend more than two-thirds of the classes and complete the program can receive an elementary or middle school graduation certificate.
This year’s free elementary and middle school equivalency program is divided into nine levels: middle school levels 1, 2, and 3 equivalency classes; elementary level 1 beginner/intermediate and integrated classes; elementary levels 2 and 3 equivalency classes; and advanced elementary classes. A total of 28 classes will be recruited. The program will be held at 16 locations within the city, including administrative welfare centers, comprehensive social welfare centers, small libraries, and senior welfare centers, from March 4 to December 12 for 41 weeks.
Since 2010, Yangsan City has been running a free Hangul education project, with over 3,240 participants to date, producing 261 elementary school graduates and 63 middle school graduates.
Mayor Na Dong-yeon stated, “I hope this will be an opportunity for illiterate adults who missed their learning period to regain confidence by bridging the basic education gap. I ask for the interest and encouragement of those around so that seniors with a passion for learning can participate confidently and actively.”
