Jeonnam Office of Education, Martial Law Incident... Strengthening Democracy and Constitutional Education
Distribution of 'Reading the Constitution' and 'History of Martial Law' Materials to Local Schools
The Jeonnam Office of Education has recently decided to strengthen democracy and constitutional education in response to the December 3 Martial Law crisis.
According to the Jeonnam Office of Education on the 16th, it plans to develop and distribute materials on the 'History of Martial Law' and 'Reading the Constitution' to all schools before the new semester in 2025. This measure aims to foster students' democratic citizenship based on the region's historical experiences related to martial law.
Jeonnam has suffered from the pain caused by martial law, including the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident in 1948 and the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement in 1980. In particular, the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident only began to be formally investigated in 2021, 73 years later, with the enactment of a special law, while the May 18 Movement achieved restoration of honor through a special law enacted in 1995.
The 'History of Martial Law' materials will cover major cases of martial law and civic resistance, from the 1948 Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident to the 1980 May 18 Democratization Movement. The 'Reading the Constitution' materials will focus on Articles 1 and 77 of the Constitution, highlighting the principles of democracy.
Superintendent Kim Daejung stated, "This constitutional and martial law history education will be a valuable opportunity to solidify democracy and community spirit," adding, "We will do our best to reflect on Jeonnam's historical lessons and help students play the role of mature democratic citizens in the future society."
