There is a legend that Doseon Guksa, who practiced Zen meditation for a long time, drank sap from the Gorosoe tree and was able to straighten his knees. While this was considered just a story passed down through generations, it was later discovered that the sap is rich in magnesium, potassium, and calcium, and a 2009 experiment by the National Institute of Forest Science proved its effectiveness in improving osteoporosis.
Gwangyang Baegunsan Gorosoe sap, the first in the nation to be registered under the Korea Forest Service's geographical indication system, is harvested from Gorosoe trees on the slopes of Baegunsan Mountain at an altitude of 1,222 meters. Only sap that has undergone a purification process is distributed and sold on the market.
To enhance the quality of Gorosoe sap and consumer trust, Gwangyang City conducted a pre-inspection of sanitary conditions for collection hoses, storage containers, and purification facilities from the 3rd to the 9th of this month.
In addition, the city has made various efforts to manage the quality of Gorosoe sap, such as using ultraviolet sterilizers and inserting QR codes that include the purification date.
This year, due to climate change, the sales period for Gorosoe sap has started earlier than last year, running from January 15 to March 15.
The selling prices for Gorosoe sap remain the same as last year: 70,000 won for 500ml x 30 bottles, 55,000 won for 1L x 12 bottles, 70,000 won for 1.5L x 12 bottles, and 70,000 won for 4.5L x 4 bottles. It can be purchased through the Gwangyang Baegunsan Gorosoe Yaksoo Farming Association and local agricultural cooperatives in each town and district.
In particular, to meet consumer demand, a new small package (1L) has been produced and released, and as the popularity of small packages as drinking water increases, sales volume is also expected to rise.
Lee Gangseong, head of the Forest Income Division, said, "With the full-scale production and sale of Gorosoe sap, we expect the income of forestry workers to increase," and added, "We will strive to supply high-quality Gorosoe sap while preserving the forest ecological environment."
