Gibson was visiting Austin, Texas, to appear on a podcast at the time of the fire. The destroyed house was where he had lived for 15 years, and it was reported that Gibson's family evacuated to escape the fire.
Gibson harshly criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, during the podcast broadcast. He said, "The governor said he would solve the wildfire problem, but he did nothing," adding, "In my opinion, all our taxes went into Gavin's hair gel."
Gibson supported President-elect Donald Trump in last year's U.S. presidential election. In addition, celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges, Billy Crystal, Adam Brody, and Milo Ventimiglia are also reported to have lost their homes in the wildfire. Paris Hilton has started an emergency fundraising campaign for the affected residents.
