Haenam County Introduces Basic Birth Allowance... '200,000 Won per Month' for Babies Born in 2024 and After
Plan to Provide a Total of 43.2 Million Won Until Age 18
Haenam County in Jeonnam Province (Governor Myung Hyun-kwan) will begin providing a basic birth allowance starting this year.
According to the county on the 7th, the recipients are children born in 2024 who have registered their birth in Haenam, and whose newborn and either father or mother are registered residents of Haenam County as of the date of birth registration. Eligible recipients will receive 200,000 KRW per month, paid on the 25th of each month based on the month of application. This amount is comprised of 100,000 KRW from Jeonnam Province subsidies and an additional 100,000 KRW from Haenam County funds.
Applications can be submitted starting one month before the child turns one year old, either by visiting the local town office or applying online through the Government24 website. Individual notifications will also be provided to eligible applicants. However, this year’s basic birth allowance support project is a temporary measure for 2025, and may be subject to change from 2026 onwards.
Jeonnam Province and Haenam County signed a joint agreement last year to promote birth allowances in response to the extremely low birth rate, and plan to establish the legal basis for payment by enacting the ‘Ordinance for the Payment of Basic Birth Allowance in Haenam County’ in February. Based on the current payment criteria, if both parents and the child remain residents of Haenam County, they can receive a total of 43,200,000 KRW (200,000 KRW per month until the child turns 18) starting from 2025.
Meanwhile, Haenam County will continue to provide other existing policies such as newborn care expenses, First Meeting Voucher, diaper purchase support, parental allowance, home care allowance, child allowance, and educational allowance according to age without change.
Governor Myung Hyun-kwan stated, “We hope that the basic birth allowance will fill the gap in support for school-age children and provide practical help to families raising children. In particular, we expect that this effective birth policy to overcome the low birth rate will serve as a turning point in preventing the decline of local communities.”
