Regional Medical Schools See Surge in Local Talent Screening Applicants
The number of applicants for the 2025 academic year medical school regular admissions has exceeded 10,000, marking a 30% increase compared to the previous year. This is analyzed to be largely influenced by the expansion of medical school quotas and an increase in the number of applicants rolling over from early admissions.
According to Jongno Academy on the 5th, the total number of applicants for the 2025 medical school regular admissions was 10,519, an increase of 2,421 applicants (29.9%) from the previous year. This is the first time in the past six years that the number of applicants for medical school regular admissions has exceeded 10,000. In the 2022 academic year, when the medical professional graduate schools were converted to undergraduate medical schools, the number of applicants increased to around 9,000 but did not surpass 10,000.
Despite the surge in applicants for medical school regular admissions, the average competition rate for medical school regular admissions slightly decreased to 6.58 to 1 from 6.71 to 1 the previous year. This is attributed to the expansion of medical school quotas and the increase in the number of applicants rolling over from early admissions to regular admissions, which raised the number of regular admission slots from 1,206 to 1,599. This year, 105 applicants rolled over from early admissions to regular admissions, more than triple the 33 applicants from the previous year.
Looking at the increase in applicants by region, the Chungcheong area had the highest increase with 762 applicants, while the Seoul area saw an increase of 55 applicants, with a growth rate of only 3.6%. The average competition rate for the eight medical schools in the Seoul area was 4.19 to 1, slightly up from 3.73 to 1 the previous year.
Notably, Soonchunhyang University recorded the highest competition rate nationwide at 26.19 to 1, followed by Kosin University (25.77 to 1), Dongguk University Wise Campus (16.33 to 1), and Dankook University Cheonan Campus (15.95 to 1). The highest competition rate in the metropolitan area was recorded by Kyung Hee University at 8.22 to 1.
