Lee Chang-yong, Governor of the Bank of Korea, stated on the 3rd, "Now is the time for the ruling and opposition parties to cooperate to stabilize the national administration," adding, "The Bank of Korea will also play the role of a breakwater, maintaining stability amid turbulent times and protecting the external credibility of our economy."
At the '2025 Pan-Financial New Year Meeting' held at Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, Governor Lee said, "Acting Governor Choi Sang-mok made a difficult but inevitable decision, prioritizing the economy over politics to prevent a decline in external credibility and a political vacuum," and evaluated, "This will serve as a starting point to inform both domestic and international audiences that our economic system will operate independently and normally, unaffected by political processes."
He added, "Going forward, monetary policy needs to be flexible and agile, considering the unprecedentedly high political and economic uncertainties and the conflicts among policy variables such as inflation, growth, exchange rates, and household debt," and stated, "The Bank of Korea will closely monitor the development of domestic and external risk factors and the resulting changes in economic trends based on incoming data, and will flexibly determine the pace of interest rate cuts."
