Jung Junho: "Deepfake Victim Student Support Act Passed by National Assembly"
“Focused on Creating Laws to Protect Livelihoods”
Jung Junho, a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Buk-gu Gap, Gwangju), announced on the 1st that the amendment to the "Act on the Prevention of and Countermeasures Against School Violence," which includes deepfake as a form of school violence and supports measures such as video deletion, has passed the National Assembly.
The bill, proposed by Representative Jung, stipulates that deepfake is considered school violence, thereby providing grounds for school authorities to establish preventive measures and respond swiftly, as well as supporting victims through actions such as the deletion of synthetic videos. Given that 68.6% of deepfake offenders are teenagers, the amendment is considered timely and appropriate.
Additionally, on the 27th of last month, the National Assembly passed the "Depositor Protection Act," also proposed by Representative Jung, as a committee alternative in the plenary session. The main point of this amendment is to raise the deposit protection limit from the current 50 million won to at least 100 million won.
Since the deposit insurance payment limit was set at 50 million won in 2001, it has remained unchanged for 23 years, leading to criticism that it no longer matches the current economic scale. With the passage of this bill, depositors will now be guaranteed at least 100 million won, further strengthening depositor protection.
Representative Jung stated, "As the economy and people's livelihoods become increasingly difficult, institutional reforms that truly change the lives of the people are desperately needed," adding, "I will continue to focus on creating livelihood legislation that prioritizes the voices from the field."
