First KS Established in Food Tech Sector for 'Plant-Based Alternative Foods and Food Upcycling'
Definition of Terms, Establishment of Technical Manufacturing Processes and Labeling Methods
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 30th that it will establish and announce four types of Korean Industrial Standards (KS) for the first time in the food tech sector, which is emerging as a new growth engine for the food industry.
Since last year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has analyzed domestic and international standards, technological trends, and products to accelerate the development of core food tech technologies. Through stakeholder consultations, it established definitions of various terms, classification criteria and requirements, technological manufacturing processes and performance indicators, and labeling methods related to plant-based alternative foods, upcycled foods, and food 3D printing technology.
Industry experts stated, "The standardization of these new food technologies is expected not only to eliminate uncertainties in companies' technology development investments but also to enhance consumer trust in related products."
The standards for plant-based alternative foods include manufacturing and processing criteria, types and grades according to quality standards, which the Ministry expects will contribute to improving food quality and enhancing consumer rights.
