The local human rights organization Plataforma Deside counted 252 deaths due to violence following the October 9 presidential election. After the Constitutional Council officially confirmed the election results on the 23rd, protests resumed along with mass prison escapes, leading to 125 deaths over three days, increasing the total death toll.
The organization stated that the damage was severe in major cities such as the capital Maputo, Beira in the north, and Nampula in the south.
They also claimed that over 4,000 citizens were arrested during the same period.
On the 25th, at least 33 inmates died in clashes with prison guards during a mass escape at a prison near the capital Maputo.
In Mozambique, after the Constitutional Council confirmed the presidential victory of Daniel Chapo, the candidate from the ruling party FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front), protests led mainly by the opposition alleging election fraud continued.
FRELIMO has been the long-term ruling party for nearly 50 years since Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. When provisional results showed FRELIMO's victory in the October presidential election, opposition candidate and independent Benancio Mondlane held protests against the election results.
