Gwangyang Free Economic Zone Authority Seeks Ways to Foster Medical Device Industry
'Expert Group Meeting' Held at Ramada Gwangju Hotel
The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Koo Chungon, hereinafter referred to as GFEZ Authority) held a 'Medical Device Industry Expert Group Meeting' at the Ramada Gwangju Hotel on the 27th to discuss sustainable development of the Gwangyang Bay Area medical device industry and strategies for attracting corporate investment.
This meeting appointed nationwide industry-academia-research experts in the medical device field, such as Yoon Sungwook, CEO of Doif Co., Ltd., and Jeon Wooyong, Acting President of Gwangyang Health College, as investment advisory committee members. It was organized to identify trends in the medical bio industry and explore strategies for attracting investment in related industries to vitalize investment in the GFEZ medical industry sector.

View original imageThe meeting featured a keynote presentation by Byun Junghoon, Senior Researcher at the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, on "Trends in the Medical Bio Industry and Strategies for Attracting Investment." The presentation analyzed major domestic and international trends in the medical device industry, examined case studies of domestic companies listed under the technology exception system, and proposed strategies to vitalize investment in medical companies suitable for the Gwangyang Bay Area.
Additionally, participants discussed various strategies for fostering the medical device industry in the Gwangyang Bay Area, including the direction of Jeonnam Province's medical device industry development, dental and biomaterials, skin treatment devices, diagnostic devices, and digital health (mental care).
The experts noted that the Gwangyang Bay Area, as a major production base in Jeonnam where many jobs and seniors coexist, requires the development of a future medical device industry that converges with existing industries, AI, and biomaterials. They agreed that, to respond to rapidly changing domestic and international environments and foster new growth engines, it is necessary to discover technology-specialized companies and attract and expand high-value-added medical devices to enhance global competitiveness.
Koo Chungon, Commissioner of the GFEZ Authority, stated, "This meeting was a meaningful opportunity for experts from industry, academia, and research to identify future growth engines for the medical device industry and explore avenues for cooperation. Going forward, we will actively gather opinions from experts and corporate stakeholders to provide proactive support for companies and attract investment, so that the Gwangyang Bay Area can leap forward as an industrial hub with global competitiveness."
