Geochang-gun Provides Convenient Digital ID Cards to Residents
Pilot Issuance of Mobile Resident Registration Cards Implemented
Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, will pilot the ‘Mobile Resident Registration Card’ service starting from the 27th to ensure the stable introduction of the mobile resident registration card.
Geochang-gun, along with eight other local governments nationwide including Sejong City, has been selected as a pilot institution for issuing mobile resident registration cards. Geochang-gun is the only district included from Gyeongsangnam-do.
The mobile resident registration card is a smartphone-based digital ID that replaces the existing plastic physical resident registration card. It allows identity verification through a mobile app and has the same legal effect as the physical resident registration card, enabling its use in daily life for financial services, administrative tasks, and more.
Residents of Geochang-gun aged 17 and older can visit the Eup/Myeon Administrative Welfare Center to obtain a mobile resident registration card. There are two issuance methods: QR code issuance and IC resident registration card issuance.
The QR code issuance method involves scanning a disposable QR code available at the Administrative Welfare Center with a smartphone to receive the mobile resident registration card. However, if the smartphone is lost or replaced, the resident must revisit the Administrative Welfare Center to reissue the card.
The IC resident registration card issuance method requires a fee of 10,000 KRW to replace the existing physical resident registration card with one embedded with an IC chip. Afterward, by touching the card to the mobile phone, the mobile resident registration card can be issued. Even if the mobile phone changes, reissuance is possible without visiting the Administrative Welfare Center.
In particular, Geochang-gun residents who turn 17 and receive their resident registration card for the first time can obtain the IC chip-embedded resident registration card free of charge.
After verifying stability through this pilot issuance operation, the mobile resident registration card service is scheduled to be expanded nationwide starting February 2025.
