Wonju City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Mayor Won Kang-su), announced on the 23rd that it was selected as an outstanding institution for public restroom management in 2024 by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and received the highest award, the ‘Presidential Citation.’

Wonju City received high praise for significantly contributing to areas such as eradicating illegal filming in public restrooms and establishing safety measures, improving systems including ordinances related to public restrooms, efforts to improve restroom usage environments, and expanding private open restrooms.

In particular, to align with national policy implementation, Wonju established the first dedicated public restroom management team in the province in 2024 and installed safety management facilities to prevent crimes and illegal filming. Additionally, through a cooperative system with the police station, joint inspections were conducted to create an environment where citizens can safely use restrooms.

Furthermore, efforts were made in various ways for the efficient operation of public restrooms, such as registering locations on map services and supporting management and operation expenses for private open restrooms.

A Wonju City official stated, “To provide an environment where citizens can use safe and clean restrooms, we will continue to carry out improvement construction on public restroom facilities and promote various policies to foster an advanced restroom culture.”
