On the 24th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had received notification of approval for the basic plan of the ‘Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line metropolitan railway construction project’ from the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee (MAWTC) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The ‘Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line metropolitan railway’ is a project to improve transportation for the 3rd New Towns Namyangju Wangsuk and Wangsuk2 districts. By extending Seoul Subway Line 9, it plans to add 17.59 km of track from Gangdong-gu, Seoul, through Hanam-si, Gyeonggi Province, to Jinjeop2 district in Namyangju-si, with 8 new stations and 1 train depot. The total project cost is approximately 2.824 trillion KRW, with an opening targeted for 2031.

The province plans to complete preliminary administrative procedures such as bid method review and contract review in 2025, followed by project plan approval and construction commencement in 2026, aiming for opening in 2031.

Once completed, the ‘Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line’ will allow travel from Jinjeop2 district in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, to Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul in just 51 minutes without transfers, expected to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce commuting times in northeastern metropolitan areas such as Misa district in Hanam-si, Dasan Jigum district, Wangsuk and Wangsuk2 districts, and Jinjeop2 district in Namyangju-si.

This is also expected to contribute to fulfilling one of Governor Kim Dong-yeon’s pledges in the 8th term of local government, ‘reducing commuting time by one hour through expansion of the metropolitan transportation network.’

A Gyeonggi Province official said, “The Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line is a key project to improve transportation for residents of the 3rd New Towns Namyangju Wangsuk and Wangsuk2 districts and the northeastern metropolitan area,” adding, “We will do our best to ensure timely opening so that the metropolitan railway axis in the northeastern region is completed and serves as an opportunity for regional development and revitalization.”
