Zelensky: "US and EU Must Unite to Stop Putin and Save Ukraine"
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, appealed on the 19th (local time) that "only the unity of the United States and the European Union (EU) can stop Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and save Ukraine."
According to DPA and AFP news agencies, President Zelensky made this statement ahead of attending the EU summit held in Brussels, Belgium, on the same day.
President Zelensky stated that he would discuss support for Ukraine once Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, takes office. He said, "It is difficult to support Ukraine without the help of the United States."
President-elect Trump said at a press conference on the 16th that the war in Ukraine is "the most horrific massacre since World War II" and that he would engage in talks with President Zelensky and President Putin to bring about an end to the war. During his campaign, he repeatedly emphasized ending the war in Ukraine.
The EU summit on this day is also expected to discuss additional air defense weapons and energy infrastructure support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky arrived in Brussels the day before and visited NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's residence, where he held a dinner meeting with key leaders from NATO and the EU. Attendees included Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Ant?nio Costa, President of the European Council, and Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany. NATO stated that the meeting was intended to discuss military and economic support for Ukraine, but some interpret it as a move to prepare countermeasures ahead of President-elect Trump's inauguration.
