Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is drawing attention by showing concrete achievements in strengthening support for people with developmental disabilities.
Under the 8th term of the elected government, Gwangjin-gu has positioned "coexistence welfare" as one of its six core strategies. It has focused on supporting people with developmental disabilities by prioritizing three areas: "employment," "care," and "alleviation of parenting burdens." Over the past two years, it has developed five new projects and increased the budget by an average of 2.1 billion KRW annually, helping to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
First, last year, the "Hope Career Lounge" was opened to support employment for people with developmental disabilities. By linking specialized vocational training with customized jobs, it has achieved employment success for 50 people annually.
Additionally, new assistant caregiver jobs for people with developmental disabilities were created, resulting in the employment of 20 individuals.
Regarding care, the "Integrated Care Service for Severely Disabled People with Developmental Disabilities" has been implemented since this year. It provides one-on-one customized services for people with severe intellectual and autism spectrum disabilities. In October, the "Jeongnip Hall," formerly a welfare center for people with physical disabilities, was converted into a comprehensive welfare center, expanding the range of benefits.
Lastly, to ease the burden on families of people with disabilities, a meal support project was launched. It provides 100,000 KRW monthly to 120 users of developmental disability day care centers each year, reducing their economic burden.
Next year, a "Developmental Disabilities Operated Cafe" is planned to open in the new Gwangjin-gu Office building. The goal is to establish practical policies that promote job creation and activate social participation for people with disabilities.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho of Gwangjin-gu said, "We are exploring various support measures for the healthy and happy lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families," adding, "We will take the lead in ensuring that people with disabilities are not marginalized and can fully become independent members of the local community."
